Persabus Pottery and Ceramic Café

Persabus Pottery and Ceramic Café is situated just off the main road between the villages of Keills and Port Askaig. The pottery offers a unique environment for you to unwind and explore your creativity, to shop, or to simply relax and enjoy the stunning scenery with a pot of tea, sandwiches and some fresh home baking.

The pottery was first established on the farm in the 1970s and has been evolving and changing over the years. Initially it was slab clay work the pottery produced, with intricate celtic designs. In the 1990s Arra Fletcher, and later his brother, Iomhar, took over the mantle and, after training with Nancy Smilie and her ceramicists, he brought his own unique individuality to the pottery. The focus was on mould building and slip clay work. Arra would design and carve out moulds, gaining inspiration from the celtic crosses and designs around Islay, and then pour slip clay into the moulds to produce unique pieces. Celtic water jugs, candle holders in the shapes of the Round Chuirch and the various island light houses were among some of his designs. Iomhar had a real flare for glazing and colouring, often collecting and using pieces of worn glassware from various beaches around Islay to create his own unique glaze mixtures.

When Arra and Iomhar left Islay the pottery closed for a few years. Today Rosemary Fletcher is running the pottery as a ceramic café. Rosemary has put her own unique artistic flare into the ceramics. Each piece is hand painted and then glazed and fired in the kiln. Inspiration for the designs is drawn from the spectacular colours Islay has to offer in the forever changing seasons and from the flora and fauna of the island.

There is a wide range of Rosemary’s work for sale, as well as gift cards created from Rosemary’s water colour paintings. Commissions and personalised pieces, and dinner services and larger items are available to order.

The pottery also offers the opportunity for you to come and have a creative afternoon and join in one of the painting workshops and have a go at putting your own unique designs onto a piece of bisque ware which will then be glazed and fired for you in the kiln. For enquiries please phone 01496 840243, or simply turn up at the pottery, a warm welcome awaits you.

The pottery is open Monday to Saturday from 12 noon until 4.00pm
